Sperm Analysis or Sperm Count?

Often, the terms "semen analysis" and "sperm count" are used interchangeably, but this is not quite correct! While a semen analysis is sometimes called a sperm test, the phrase "sperm count" significantly undersells the investigation.

A semen analysis, often mistaken for just a sperm count, is a comprehensive evaluation of the production of healthy, motile sperm. This analysis is crucial for assessing a man's ability and likelihood of fathering a child. While the number of sperm is a key component, a semen analysis also examines the quality and motility of the sperm. Simply counting the sperm wouldn't provide the full picture!

Although a semen analysis is not a direct measure of fertility, it serves as an excellent indicator of the probability of conception from a male fertility perspective.

Who Should Have a Semen Analysis?

We generally recommend a semen analysis for anyone trying to start a family for six months, especially if the female partner is over 30 years old. An abnormal semen analysis result can indicate broader health issues, making it important to identify any underlying problems early.

What Does a Semen Analysis Include?

At Fertility Solutions, every semen analysis is performed by an exceptionally qualified Consultant Embryologist. This is crucial because identifying subtle yet significant issues with sperm motility and quality requires a highly trained eye. Our embryologists, who work daily in fertility units processing sperm for IVF, IUI, and ICSI, are best placed to identify and diagnose even the smallest abnormalities.

We provide a comprehensive breakdown and discussion of your results, along with the best treatment options, so you leave with both answers and a plan.

Who is Involved?

Our world-renowned urologist, Mr. Jonathan Ramsay, widely regarded as the UK’s leading expert in male fertility, will review your results and outline treatment options for you. Our embryologists will discuss your results with you and develop a referral or treatment pathway tailored to your needs.
