What is a sperm retrieval?

A surgical sperm retrieval (SSR) is a technique that can be used to collect sperm from the reproductive tract. There are different types of SSRs, including:

  • Percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration (PESA): A fine needle is used to extract sperm from the epididymis, which is a coiled tube next to the testicles that helps to mature sperm.
  • Testicular sperm aspiration (TESA): A fine needle retrieves sperm directly from the testicles.
  • Testicular sperm extraction (TESE): A small portion of testicular tissue is removed and checked for the presence of sperm.

SSR is recommended for men who have no, or very few, sperm in their ejaculate.
