Sperm mapping
A diagnostic procedure, pioneered by our consultant urologist Mr Jonathan Ramsay, to identify areas of sperm production to improve success rates of sperm retrieval.

Why have sperm mapping
In non-obstructive azoospermia there are small islands of sperm within the testicle. It is vital to locate these islands prior to sperm retrieval to increase the chances of a successful sperm retrieval. A sperm mapping may also be called FNA (fine needle aspiration).
What
- This procedure is purely diagnostic - it doesn't actually retrieve the sperm but it tells us whether or not the islands of sperm exists and where in the testicles they are. So when the sperm retrieval procedure is performed we can target those areas specifically.

Traditionally, the response to a couple facing fertility problems has been to focus on the woman with little evaluation of the male partner.
Often, assessing why there is an abnormal semen analysis and working to correct this will result in drastic improvements in male fertility and therefore likelihood of a successful pregnancy.

Advantages
Sperm mapping allows us to identify if sperm production is present, where is it and therefore we can perform a targeted retrieval. This also means we can perform the sperm retrieval at the same time as egg harvesting to avoid freezing the sperm or eggs to enhance success rates.

Disadvantages of sperm mapping
The only disadvantage is that patient does undergo and extra procedure for diagnostic purposes. We believe that for patients with non-obstructive azoospermia the advantages of sperm mapping far outweigh the potential disadvantage.
